The information available in the standard DATA handle is coming from your scripts file. This is why you can't and shouldn't write to DATA. You're only supposed to read, since a write would change the very script which is running.

With App::Unding I will try to make a case, why sometimes it is useful to write to DATA anyways, and how to achieve it technically.
